Alfie the Angry Shih Tzu. Taken just thirty minutes after he was rescued from the Vets.

I had no idea where I was going; one minute I was at the vets and the next a strange couple and their dog were putting me in their car and I was heading north up the A19. It was frightening and exciting at the same time. I could feel the tension in the air. We are very good at reading body language, us dogs but I was getting some very mixed signals.

We stopped off at Wynyard Golf Club, it was still a very warm and sunny afternoon, so we sat outside. I met a couple of people who were very interested in me and what I was doing there. The couple were explaining how I had been brought in to be euthanised because of aggressive behaviour and biting people. I could tell the man was more uneasy about me than the lady. It sounded like he was worried how I was going to get on with their dog, Billie who was quite an old border collie.

After a while we moved on. The man walked me and Billie together. I kept trying to play with Billie but she was growling and letting me know she was not too happy about me being there. The walk took a long while and we were getting used to each other. We eventually got to The Stables, my new local pub. There were lots of people outside and so we stopped there and lots more strangers came to greet me and say hello.

Then we went to what would be my new home. I was getting tired and a bit grumpy. I was wondering where my real family had got to. I began to relax and nodded off. They woke me and told me we were going up to bed, so I went with them. Billie slept on the floor, but I chose the bottom of the bed…. the next thing I knew it was morning.

Alfie the Angry Shih Tzu Sleeping after an eventful day!

The first few days I was on my best behaviour, everyone wondered when they were going to see the angry dog. I met some neighbours and one of them, Jayne took lots of photos of me. I was getting irritated by the flash but apart from a little growl, I was still being good.

My good behaviour couldn’t last and soon I was challenging people to find my place in the pack. The first time was when we went to bed, I wanted to be where dad sleeps so I hopped up before he got there. He told me to get down and I growled at him. He went to move me and I snapped and went to bite him. He got me by my collar and lifted me to the floor. I attacked again biting his legs. The honeymoon period was over and there was trouble ahead!
